“My Life In China” is named after a book my brother recommended for me: “My Life in China & America” by Yung Wing, the first Chinese scholar to graduate from an American university (Yale). “My Life In China and America” is Yung Wing’s autobiographical book that describes his experience as an immigrant in America and his difficulties re-entering China. He was the person that encouraged the Qing Dynasty to start sending students to the United States for a “Western education”. This paved the way for the first official student exchange programs in China.

In a way, “My Life In China” is an homage to Yung Wing and his work. As somebody who was lucky enough to get a great education from the best schools in America, I wanted to make a film that conveyed a message that education can change anybody’s life situation.
